Walking the Hidden Rivers
フローとフロート：隠れた川を散歩する

After moving from Bangkok to Tokyo in 2023, I became fascinated by Tokyo’s quiet, hidden waterways—sometimes heard rather than seen. This contrasts with Thailand, where rivers and canals remain visibly present through flooding and daily life. In Tokyo, many rivers began to be transformed into ankyo in the Meiji period and were extensively covered during preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, continuing to flow unseen beneath streets and buildings.

I am a multidisciplinary artist with a background in theatre, working through research-based, site-specific, and community-oriented practice. In this project, walking becomes a method to connect with the city’s unseen layers. Living alone as an immigrant, walking becomes a way to negotiate belonging through attention to infrastructure, memory, and imagination. This project asks: how can walking along the route of an ankyo from Sendagaya Station to Shibuya create new ways of sensing and understanding these neighborhoods and Tokyo as a whole?

I walked with six participants—four artists (sound, sculpture, and visual) and two architects from Japanese, Thai, Malaysian, and Cambodian backgrounds in 2025. The walking interviews encouraged dialogue between personal experience and spatial observation.

The research will unfold into a book that maps the route through history, observation, fiction, and the participants’ lived flows and contributions. Accompanied by field-recording audio, the publication becomes a medium that opens new ways of experiencing and sensing Tokyo through its hidden waterways.

2023年にバンコクから東京へ移り住んで以来、私は東京にひそやかに存在する見えない水路に魅了されてきた。それらは目で見るというよりも、時に音として知覚される。洪水や日常生活の中で川や運河が視覚的に現れ続けるタイとは対照的に、東京では多くの河川が明治期から暗渠化され、さらに1964年東京オリンピックの準備を通して大規模に覆われ、いまも道路や建築の下を人知れず流れ続けている。

私は演劇をバックグラウンドに持つマルチディシプリナリー・アーティストとして、リサーチベース、サイトスペシフィック、コミュニティ志向の実践を行っている。本プロジェクトにおいて、散歩することは都市の不可視のレイヤーと接続するための方法となる。移民として単身で暮らすなかで、散歩はインフラ、記憶、想像力への注意を通して「居場所」を交渉する行為でもある。本作は、千駄ヶ谷駅から渋谷まで暗渠のルートに沿って散歩することで、これらの街区や東京という都市をどのように新たに感覚し、理解できるのかを問いかける。

私は2025年に、6名の参加者とともに散歩を行った。音、彫刻、ビジュアル分野のアーティスト4名と建築家2名で構成され、日本、タイ、マレーシア、カンボジアという異なる背景を持つメンバーである。散歩しながらのインタビューは、個人的な経験と空間的観察のあいだに対話を生み出した。

​ 本リサーチは、歴史、観察、フィクション、そして参加者それぞれの「生の流れ」や寄与を通してルートを編み直す書籍へと展開される。フィールドレコーディング音声とともに構成される本書は、東京の隠れた水路を手がかりに、読者に都市を再感覚させる体験を差し出すメディアとなる。

This playlist brings together field recordings, including excerpts from walking interviews with six participants, along with sounds I collected in Shikano (Tottori), Shōnandai, and Koganei.  These recordings are used to imagine what kind of soundscape today’s Sendagaya, Harajuku, and Shibuya might once have had — a town without ankyo (covered rivers), a playground by the river, and a waterwheel, for example.

このプレイリストは、6人の参加者とのウォーキング・インタビューの抜粋を含むフィールドレコーディングと、鳥取・鹿野、湘南台、小金井で私が収集した音をまとめたものです。 これらの録音を通して、現在の千駄ヶ谷・原宿・渋谷がかつて持っていたかもしれない音風景――暗渠のない町、川沿いの遊び場、水車のある風景など――を想像しています。

Using public-domain photographs and images I took during fieldwork and walking interviews with participants, I overlay the word 流れ (flow) onto the landscape.  I am experimenting with how to tell the story of the Shibuya River as it moves through Sendagaya, Harajuku, and Shibuya. A subtle current that sometimes appears and sometimes disappears from view.

パブリックドメインの古い写真や、フィールドワークや参加者とのウォーキング・インタビューの中で私自身が撮影した写真の上に、「流れ」という言葉を重ねています。 テキストを用いたこの実践を通して、千駄ヶ谷、原宿、渋谷を通って流れる渋谷川の物語をどのように伝えられるかを探っています。ときに見え、ときに見えなくなる、そのささやかな流れを表現する試みです。
